Basalt cone
Visit according to Alexander von Humboldt “Europe’s most beautiful basalt cone” with its geologic and historic attractions.
Already in 1937, the basalt cone was designated a nature conservation area due to its uniqueness and the rare diversity of flora. Still today, Parkstein’s particular geology fascinates geoscientists, in so much it was included in 2003 in the list of the 100 most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria and was awarded the predicated title “National Geotope” in 2006.
The mountain peak is 595 m above sea level. A charming mountain church, a castle ruin, the impressive basalt wall and last but not least breathtaking views from the summit await you. Our geopath and the rock cellar can be optimally integrated into a tour on and around the basalt cone. Convince yourself on spot of its beauty and learn about its formation about 24 million years ago in the museum.
